Company Retires Original DC-10 Airtanker Local Officials Plan a Fitting Departure

At 9 a.m. Saturday, officials at Castle Airport will honor Tanker 910, the original DC-10 airtanker and first Next Generation airtanker, which is being retired.

Albuquerque-based 10 Tanker Air Carrier announced in August that 2014 will be the last year T-910 will fly for the company.  Its final flight will be this Saturday when the airplane will fly from Castle, which has been 910’s base since last summer, to Oscota Michigan for dismantling.  To honor the work the airplane has done on California fires, officials at Castle Airport plan to salute the airplane as it takes off for the last time.

The aircraft was converted to an airtanker in 2004, and began working in California under a Cal Fire contract in 2006.

Since that time, Tanker 910 has dropped over 500 fire missions in California, and over 750 across the country.  Those fires have included the Rim Fire, King Fire, Mountain Fire, Zaca Fire, Station Fire and the Happy Camp Complex.

10 Tanker air carrier plans to replace Tanker 910 with a newer airframe that will carry the same “910” designation as the plane being retired this fall.
