Dr. Chen served 2015 Unified Wine and Grape Symposium as an invited panelist

February 1, 2015

On Jan 28, 2015, Sacramento Convention Center, Dr. Chen introduced UC Merced, MESA LAB and the research theme of "scientific data drone (SDD)" and name difference in UAV, UAS and SDD. He emphasized the take-home message in the beginning "we need more research" (to make scientific sense of sensed data) by referring the last session's same, repeated message on the need of research. He briefly dicussed the on-going hardcore research questions being addressed in MESA LAB on how to quantify the crops stress at the scientific level based on physics and math. He also emphasized the spiral notion of "data-decision-action-data" cycle with "data-to-value" span off the spiral.

The talk was about 20-25 min. with no PPT and the room was packed with about 100-200 attendants.

Vineyard Tech Advancements for Viticultural Decision-Making Grapegrowing Breakout Session

Most agree that your own eyes are the best tools to use for successful vineyard management. The future is looking exceptionally bright for deploying meaningful technology in our vineyards that provide great utility and productivity to growers and winemakers.  Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly referred to as “Drones”, have made the leap from the military into the hands of agriculturists and the everyday hobbyist. In this session, you will learn and understand how drones and other new technology applications are being deployed today in vineyards and other ag industries.
